There is so much to see and do on the South Shore (and beyond) this summer.  Keeping a summer “bucket list” to fill your days will help make the most of your all too short summer vacation.   When the inevitable “What are we going to do today?” question comes up, you’ll have a great list of answers ready to go!

Here’s what you’ll find on our Summer Bucket List:

Pick-your-own Fruit – What’s better than fresh from the farm?  We had such a great time at Treeberry Farm last summer, it’s at the top of our Summer Bucket List again this year!  Find a list of local farms here.

Hit the beach.  We have our favorites, but are making an effort to see more of the beautiful beaches the South Shore (and beyond) has to offer this season.

Castle Island – Take a walk or bike ride around Castle Island’s paths, bring your suit for a dip in the water, spend some time at the playground, then stop at Sullivan’s for a snack or some ice cream!

Boston Duck Tours – Tours leave from three locations;  The Museum of Science, Prudential Center, and the New England Aquarium.  Early Bird Savings:  Purchase a 9am tour over the phone and save $3 per ticket.

See Butterflies – Walk among the butterflies at The Butterfly Place in Westford.  Like them on Facebook to get a $1 discount coupon.

The Zoo – We are lucky to have so many local zoos available to us!  Check out Roger Williams Park Zoo, Franklin Park Zoo, Capron Park Zoo, Stone Zoo, and Buttonwood Park Zoo.

Miniature Golf – Find a list of Massachusetts mini golf courses here.

Letterboxing – What is letterboxing?  Here’s the deal;  someone hides a box somewhere (usually a remote location) containing a log book and a rubber stamp, then writes directions/clues to the box for others to find.  Hunters follow the clues, carrying with them their own personal logbook and stamp.  Once the box is found, the hunter stamps the hidden book with is stamp, and his personal book with the hidden stamp.  This way the box’s logbook has a record of all who found it, and the hunter keeps a record of all the boxes he/she has found.  Find our more about letterboxing in Massachusetts here.

Swan Boats Take a relaxing 15 minute ride around the Public Garden Lagoon. Swan boats are open 7 days a week, weather permitting.

Boston Harbor Islands – Visit Georges Island, Spectacle Island, Bumpkin Island, Lovells Island and more. The Boston Harbor Alliance offers family events all summer long on different islands, including Nature Walks, Plays in the Park, Island Yoga and more.  See the entire event list here.

Home Depot FREE Kids Workshops.  Workshops are held the first Saturday of each month, and feature a different wooden project each time.  Participants receive a certificate of achievement, an apron, and a pin.

Free Kids Clinics at Lowes, on select weekends each month.  Kids build their own wooden project, and take home a free apron, goggles, and a project patch.

Mendon Drive-In – It’s a pretty long drive, but completely worth it.  Movies are offered on two screens nightly, two films per screen.  The first movie starts at dusk.  Cost is $25 per car, no credit or debit cards accepted.

Puppet Show – See the Toe Jam Puppet Band at different venues throughout the summer.  Check their performance schedule here.

Kids Music – Catch a musical performance by the fantastic Mama Steph, see her summer schedule here.

Patriots Training Camp – Open to the public on select dates in late July/early August.  Kids can see their favorite players practice, then play in the Patriots Fan Zone, featuring inflatable obstacle courses, skills tests and more.

Go See a Game – Root for one of our fabulous local teams, no matter your budget, there’s a ticket price for you; Boston Red Sox, Brockton Rox, Cape Cod Baseball League, New England Revolution, Pawtucket Red Sox.  Check out Futures at Fenway on July 27th for a more economical way to see a game at Fenway.

FREE Outdoor Movies -  Grab some chairs or a blanket, a few snacks, and head out for one of these free outdoor movies.

FREE Outdoor Music – Enjoy live music, under the stars!  Stop by Musical Nights on weekends in July and August at Derby Street Shoppes, and Friday Night Music at the Hingham Shipyard.

Summer Sensation at Patriot Place – FREE family friendly activities daily, including jumpy houses, story times, live music and more.  Visit the Patriot Place website for more information.

Museums – Visit one of our many local museums, many offer days/times with free or reduced admission (noted below):

Free Museum Admission – Get in for FREE at local museums and venues with Free Fun Fridays from the Highland Street Foundation:

Great list! Futures at Fenway is coming up this July which is a fun way to enjoy a game with the family without the large price tag– I think $5 tickets, and dogs can come too!
Foxboro/Patriots Place also has a lot of fun and free summer things happening with their summer sensation series and free movies occasionally too! Perfect if an event matches up with Patriots training!

Great summer bucket list :)

Creating a local summer bucket list is a great idea! It is the perfect thing to do to fill up your summer with fun and cost effective activities in your area. It is especially great if you are planning a staycation and looking for things to do in your area.

Thanks for this info. I have been looking on my own, but having this all together is very helpful. The activities are so varied there is bound to be something to please everyone. And the fact that many things are free or can be attended with a discount ticket or coupon is a real asset. Nice to have a resource where fun doesn’t have to be expensive.

Wow! Amazing list! I am going to mention this on MommaJam tomorrow morning on 95.9 WATD. Great job, South Shore Mamas! We like to write our ideas on strips of paper and put them into a hat, and when we need activities, draw them out of the hat and go! We will surely be adding these a lot of these ideas. One to add: the old Mary’s Boat Yard in Marshfield has been renovated and it under new ownership. It’s a great pit stop for ice cream, snacks and lunch by car or boat.
